Alright, so HK dropped a new tank regulator, and I’ve been digging into what’s actually different about it — and whether it’s worth the extra cash. It’s called the HK Army 130/140, priced at $130 for the standard and $140 for the long version. Basically, the only physical difference is the length, which gives you a bit more reach depending on your setup. For reference, the reg it’s replacing — the Aerolite — sold for $110.
Now, this new one is adjustable. You can tweak the output pressure by swapping in a single shim instead of stacking a bunch like before, which is cleaner. They also kept the rotational bonnet (shoutout to Ninja for popularizing that), and you can still buy a stainless steel bonnet for $30 if you want to upgrade. HK says it includes some “airflow stabilized” brass insert to slow the air surge — no clue how big of a deal that really is, but we’ll take a closer look.
If you break it down, there’s not that much that’s radically different. Same main spring, same overall guts. The piston looks close to the old one, and the new fill nipple has a spring-loaded pin to block debris — which is nice — but nothing game-changing. My guess? HK just wanted a way to bump the price without straight-up raising it on the Aerolite. Instead of saying “this reg costs more now,” they launched a “new” version with minor upgrades and a fresh name.
Is it better? Maybe. Is it $20 better? That’s up to you. I’ll keep messing with it, but if you’re running an old Aerolite and it works fine, this probably isn’t something you need to rush out and grab.
