One thing I’ve always liked about paintball is how the game keeps changing. Every few years we get new bunkers, and it keeps things interesting. Remember when we switched from woodsball to hyperball? Or when the giant X showed up in the middle of the field during the Xball era? More recently, in 2019, we got the big brick and the big wedge. New shapes keep the game fresh, and they definitely make me want to watch and play more.
Now it looks like the NXL might be adding a new one. Some photos showed up online of this strange, star-shaped bunker being used on a field in France. It kind of looks like a ninja star or a squashed-down version of the wedge. We don’t know for sure if this will be part of the new NXL bunker set, but Supair made it, and they make all the official bunkers for NXL. So it’s a strong maybe. Tom Cole has already confirmed that new bunkers are coming. We just don’t know which ones yet.
If this is one of them, it could be fun to play. You can hide really well behind it, which might create some new angles and strategies. But it also looks a little awkward. It seems like it only gives you clean shots to one side. If you want to shoot the other side, you have to move way off the bunker, which could expose your entire body. It’s kind of like playing a wedge that only works from one direction.
People are already split on it. Some say it looks impossible to ref. Others think it will be annoying since players can hide so well. Personally, I think anything new is worth trying. We always complain at first, and then we get used to it.
