The DLX lineup, including the Shocker amp and Luxe TM40, shared similar bolt designs. The newly released $1,000 Shocker ERA and $1,800 Luxe IDOL also boast similar internals, raising questions about their differences and DLX’s claim of the IDOL being the most redesigned Lux. While the IDOL’s exterior maintains the sleek Luxe silhouette, it sports a larger OLED screen on the left-hand side, a departure from the TM40’s smaller screen.
The IDOL’s bolt, akin to the TM40’s with some tweaks, aims to ease paintball handling and address roll-back issues. These adjustments result in a smoother shooting experience with a slightly different sound signature compared to the tM40. Despite minor changes, the IDOL offers noticeable improvements in trigger feel, featuring a new metal-on-metal trigger stop.
Functionally, the IDOL’s programming mode could benefit from a quicker navigation method. Removing the back-strap for charging, although well-built, proves challenging due to sharp edges. However, the relocation of the USB-C charging port and the redesigned battery lock enhance usability.
Internally, the IDOL sees refinements in solenoid removal and grip design, contributing to a premium feel. The wider ASA lever and addition of air plugs improve seal integrity and ease of operation. These enhancements, coupled with the IDOL’s tool-less features and ergonomic improvements, make it a compelling option over the Era, despite their similar performance.
Ultimately, while the IDOL and Era perform similarly, the former’s added features and design refinements justify its higher price. DLX’s efforts in redesigning the IDOL undoubtedly make it the most overhauled Luxe model to date.
The Shocker paintball guns have been a top choice for the past two decades, and the latest model, ERA, is no exception. Featuring the renowned Freak XL barrel, it stands out as one of the lightest guns while being available at half the price of other high-end guns. Check it out!
